The art of wealth management.
Built by someone who lived the alternative.
DTWN's vision is deeply personal. It developed out of Joe Cefalu's 25+ years at Goldman Sachs, UBS, and Merrill Lynch, where he watched the industry he loved become something he no longer recognized.
What emerged from that discomfort was Downtown Wealth Studios, a firm built to do this work right, for people who deserve it.
Our Story.

Something vital
was being lost.
"There was an increasing and persistent sense that wealth management had become more corporatized and less personal, less creative, and more detached from its original purpose."
Joe spent 25+ years at Goldman Sachs, UBS, and Merrill Lynch watching the private wealth management industry evolve in a direction that troubled him. The business models were being built for institutions, not for the clients they were meant to serve, and not for the advisors meant to serve them.
Production targets replaced professional judgment. Product quotas replaced genuine advice. The sense that "putting clients first" was still the actual operating principle faded, and was replaced by a polished version of something that only resembled it.

A walk through
SoHo changed
everything.
"The inspiration for DTWN came during a walk with a client through New York City's SoHo neighborhood, a place where creativity and commerce have always lived together."
The discomfort with the status quo, and the mounting sense of loss around what wealth management could and should be, had been building for years. The SoHo walk catalyzed it into something actionable.
In the galleries and studios and creative businesses of that neighborhood, Joe saw what he wanted the firm to feel like: purposeful, personal, built around the human being in front of you rather than the account size behind them.

A firm where advisors thrive
as entrepreneurs
and artists.
"That walk catalyzed Joe to create a company where advisors would thrive as entrepreneurs and artists, and where clients would experience wealth management as a deeply personal endeavor."
Downtown Wealth Studios was co-founded in 2023 by Joe Cefalu and Peter Jiang. We are registered investment advisors: fiduciary, fee-only, and independent. No products to push. No institutional quotas. No conflict between what's good for us and what's good for you.
We built the firm to attract clients whose financial lives are genuinely complex and interesting, and advisors who want to do their best work without the parts that get in the way.
The principles behind
everything we build.
Fiduciary is a structure, not a slogan.
We are legally required to act in your interest, always. Not "suitable for you," not "in the context of our product lineup." In your interest, full stop.
Creativity is a professional obligation.
Your financial life is unique. The plan we build for you should reflect that, not a template. We approach each client the way a skilled architect approaches a building: the structure must work, but it should also reflect who it's for.
Complexity is a feature, not a problem.
We were deliberately built for the financial situations that most advisors oversimplify. Variable income. Concentrated equity. Business exits. Multigenerational dynamics. The harder the problem, the more useful we are.
Small is a competitive advantage.
We keep our client base deliberately small. Not because we can't grow, but because we believe the quality of attention matters more than the quantity of accounts. You work directly with us. Always.
Coordination is an undervalued service.
The gap between advisors who each see one piece and no one connecting the dots is where wealth gets quietly eroded. We act as the quarterback across every professional in your financial life.
The work should speak for itself.
We built the firm in the spirit of the artists we admire, people who believed that excellence in the work was the only worthwhile metric. We hold ourselves to the same standard.
"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see."– Edgar Degas
What
Downtown
means to us.
DTWN
The name isn't accidental. Downtown, whether SoHo in New York or Wynwood in Miami, is where creative energy and serious commerce have always coexisted. It's where artists and entrepreneurs and people building something real have always found each other.
We chose that name because we wanted to build a firm that felt like that neighborhood: unconventional in its approach, serious in its craft, and genuinely invested in the people it serves.
Studios, not offices. Advisors who think like artists and entrepreneurs, not salespeople. Clients who are building something, financially, creatively, professionally, and want a partner who gets it.
That's what Downtown Wealth Studios is. That's why the name matters to us. And it's the standard we hold ourselves to every day.
